Open virtual neighbourhood network to connect IoT infrastructures and smart objects
The lack of interoperability is considered as the most important barrier to achieve the global integration of IoT ecosystems across borders of different disciplines, vendors and standards. Indeed, the current IoT landscape consists of a large set of isolated islands that do not constitute a real internet, preventing the exploitation of the huge potential expected by ICT visionaries.
VICINITY will build and demonstrate a device and standard agnostic platform for IoT infrastructures that will offer "Interoperability as a Service". It will rely on a decentralised and user-centric approach that offer a complete transparency across vertical domains while retaining full control of the ownership and distribution of data.
The VICINITY project aims to build and demonstrate a bottom-up ecosystem of decentralised interoperability of IoT infrastructures called virtual neighbourhood, where users can share the access to their smart objects without losing the control over them. The ubiquitous interoperability that is intended to be brought by VICINITY will release the vendor locks that are present in the current IoT ecosystems, and open the door towards independent value added services across IoT domains taking benefits of the availability of big amounts of data in semantic formats that are generated by IoT assets.
First review for VICINITY is completed in Brussels on 1st of September 2017 with success!
The VICINITY project undertook a detailed Review with the European Commission (EC) representatives. The review was especially impressive in technical terms as the first integrated prototype demonstration at the Test bed infrastructures for the first stage of implementation was successful.
VICINITY will engage new partners through 2 Open calls with a budget of €500K. One open call will be devoted to system integrators for Integration of IoT infrastructures deployed at public facilities in the domain of healthcare, smart grids, transport or intelligent buildings. Another open call will look for value added services over IoT infrastructure in the domain of healthcare, smart grids, transport or intelligent buildings.
Society is about to see a major shift in the accountability of organisations that make use of individuals’ personal data. Currently people give implied consent for the use of personal data on many occasions, such as when they accept the terms and conditions associated with downloading a new app. Less than 1% of people understand what personal data might be collected and how it might be used.
We are all very excited about being able to present these news; Friday, 1st of September represented a milestone for VICINITY2020. We did for the first time publically demonstrate that we have a working version of nteroperability as a Service. Giant leaps always starts with small steps.
One of the key elements of VICINITY is the ability to cross boundaries between devices, allowing them to share data regardless of physical location, brand or functionality. This is exactly what happened on this grey and rainy Friday.
VICINITY is now at the end of its first reporting period. We have so far completed the VICINITY specification and have started on the implementation. What follows is a hot summer to review so far and to demonstrate the results. Time will show what is hotter: the summer or the workload and we all have a lot of work to do at the wrong time.
VICINITY is now in its most important phase, for several reasons. First, we are in the process of finishing the requirements and specification phase. Second, we are starting development of the software and getting more in-depth into modeling of the use cases. Third, we are facing our first real review in September.
